Deer Industry New Zealand and Vegetables.co.nz have teamed up to reward food writers who encourage their readers to make healthy and delicious meal decisions.
There are 4 prizes of $500. One for the best recipe in each of the 3 categories: family meal recipe, special occasion recipe, and a healthy recipe, as well as the overall winner.
To enter, send us your published recipes using New Zealand farm raised venison and fresh New Zealand vegetables.
To be eligible, recipes must be published between 1st November 2011 and 31st March 2012, and use fresh New Zealand grown vegetables and New Zealand farm raised venison.
Compulsory elements:
1. All recipes must be accompanied by proof of publication (print or online) between the dates specified (1 November 2011 to 31 March 2012).
2. The recipe must specify one of: ‘farm-raised venison', ‘Cervena® venison', or the name of the farm-raised venison brand, i.e. ‘Woodburn', ‘Silver Fern Farms', ‘Firstlight' etc.
3. Recipes must use fresh New Zealand grown vegetables. No other vegetables (e.g. imported) are to be used.
4. Recipe must be accompanied with a 300 dpi colour photo of the dish suitable for professional reproduction, with permission for DINZ and/or vegetables.co.nz to use.
5. Entrants must specify which category they are entering.
6. The overall winner may be photographed accepting the prize and this used for publicity.
Entrants will receive a voucher for one pack of venison for every entry accepted for judging.
Entrants will receive $100 for each recipe used for publication by DINZ and Vegetables.co.nz.
Judging Criteria:
• Recipe precision: Completeness and perceived ease of use.
• Correct cooking technique and timing: i.e. if using dry heat, venison is best served rare/medium-rare.
• Flavour: Farm raised venison has a mild but distinctive flavour - does the recipe and vegetables used enhance this or detract from it.
• Appropriate cut selection: Is the cut the correct choice for the dish and the cooking technique?
• Family Recipe: A recipe for a family that will shows how children can get their iron and protein using fresh New Zealand grown vegetables and cost effective venison products such as mince, stir-fry or dice.
• Healthy recipe: The recipe which best shows the positive contribution venison and vegetables can make to a healthy diet, in line with the Ministry of Health's Food and Nutritional guidelines. A brief statement to support encouraging nutrition attributes must be in the published article.
• Best overall recipe: In the opinion of the judges, the recipe that best demonstrates the ease of preparation and delicious healthy versatility of New Zealand farm raised venison and fresh New Zealand grown vegetables.

Entrants:
• must specify which category they are entering
• can submit as many entries as they wish
• can submit one recipe for more than one category.
Judging will take place on or around April 15, 2012 with winners being announced soon afterwards.
The Judges are Chef Graham Brown, Cervena International Chef; Chef Alan Brown, Senior lecturer, AUT; Innes Moffat, Marketing Manager, DINZ; and Pip Duncan, Foodservice Consultant, Vegetables.co.nz.
The Fine Print.
Entrants state that recipes submitted are their original work. By entering the competition, entrants retain the ownership of their entries but give Deer Industry New Zealand permission to use the recipe, the image, and the name of the entrant to promote New Zealand farm raised venison in New Zealand and other countries as Deer Industry New Zealand sees fit.
